Willie Dryburgh MBE

Willie Dryburgh MBE - Local Characters
Willie received his MBE in 31st Dec 1993 for his services to the community of Alva.
His other claim to fame is he was born in the ark :) (an old street in Alva long since demolished)
Willie told me how it all started off when he was visiting a cousin in Glasgow he was invited to go along to a "back court concert" so he decided to do a open air concert for the Red Cross in Duke St Alva, which became very popular, he also told me that they used to hold a white bed sheet out while singing penny's from heaven where people would throw coins to help raise funds, (an idea given to him by a serving soldier based in the now masonic building).
In 1942 Willie then joined the air force as a radio operator with 518 squadron based in Tiree & Aldergrove, Ireland, flying in mostly Halifax bombers.
when he returned he restarted the concerts & packed out the Cochrane hall on Sunday evenings & as no dancing was allowed on a Sunday he had to obtain special permission from the local magistrate to hold them.
Willie was also asked to become the president of the Alva pensioners at the tender age of 24 where he organised concerts, dinners, day trips, holiday & swimming clubs for the members a position he still holds today after 50 years.
